Honey Bee Activity Cycle – Yearly

For beekeepers a normal bee year is from september till august the following year. I tried to make a short overview for myself. This calendar is based on the climate in the netherlands. I live near amsterdam so if you check a map of the earth you can see we have a tempered climate. A beekeeping season for someone who lives in a tropical climate is different than somebody who lives in norhtern europe. But nonetheless you can get a image on how the hive behaves during a year. In nature the bees regulate swarming themselves. The time of swarming depends in what state the bees come through the winter. If the hive contains enough bees they are very likely to swarm earlier than a small hive. The hive needs to get stronger. After the hive regained its strength it is ready to ’swarm’. Looking for the queen

Normally when people ask me “how did I get started with beekeeping”, I tell them the short version of “Follow a course, buy some bees and have fun”. But unfortunately it is not that easy. In this post I will give the longer version.

In these series of articles I will write about a more European perspective of beekeeping. Online there is a lot of information to find about the american way of beekeeping. But there is still a little room to tell the story of a  beginning dutch beekeeper.
